The course helps students understand communication phenomena with a social science discipline and engage in critical thinking process. Students will learn several fields of communication research, and get an opportunity to explore concepts and issues in the fields. ===== Outlines of the course ===== The topics of the course are composed of introduction, and discussion of various communication theories in everyday-life fields -- mainly intrapersonal, interpersonal, culture, persuasion, leadership, group communication, organizational communication, mediated communication. Students are expected to read the class materials (textbooks and others), and actively engage in discussions on the topics. Also, there will be group presentations for communication theory. ''__Readings__'' \\ Students are responsible to complete the specific readings before the class session. Students will randomly (upon instructor's call) participate in presenting the theories and their responses to them. ''__Quizes__'' \\ 20 or more minute quiz will be held at least 4 times. You can skip or discard one quiz score, which is the lowest. The quiz scores will be counted toward your final grade. No make-up will be offered. Each quiz will cover the materials of reading assignments and class activities since the previous quiz. ''__Final Exam__'' \\ No final exam or mid exam. ''__Your Theory Study Log__'' \\ There will be either a short essay assignment at each week (See the class schedule page). The essay should be consist of 2-4 paragraphs (1 or 2 A4 paper). This assignment should be listed in your wiki space (under the ajoubb). You should also bring and submit the assignment in print before the class. You should finish all the assignments. Five of them, which will be randomly chosen, will be reviewed, scored, and commented. The grade will be combined completeness + scores for the five assignments. ''__Group Project__'' \\ Each group will select theories and positions to study in depth. Group members will explore the topic widely and deeply. The theory that you will cover should be listed and maintained in the wiki page as well. The intent of research project is that you discover information and ideas about the theory that will be presented in the text. You should use the library databases for researching the topic. More specific requirement will be updated in this wiki spot. ''__Maintaining theory wiki page and oral presentation__'' \\ Students should take care of the wiki page for the specific topic that they will cover. The page should contain the explanation of the theory; answers to some questions form other students and instructor; and questions for other topics. ===== Attendance ===== Your attendance and participation in class is important. Throughout the semester, you will earn a small percentage of points toward the final grade for your participation in the class activities. Class activities cannot be made up. ===== Assignments ===== Absolute no make-up. * Quizes 3(4) out of 4(5) 39% * Maintaining theory study (individual assignment) 20% * Mid/Final Research Project (group) 30% * Maintaining theory wiki page + participation 10% * Participation 1% All assignment should be completed and turned in on time. Late assignment may not be accepted.
