	+	가설에는 차이를 나타내는 가설과 상관을 나타내는 가설이 있다고 하였다. 이렇게 만들어진 가설을 연구가설(research hypothesis) 혹은 대안가설(alternative hypothesis)라고 한다. 이 가설을 뒤집어서 생각하는 경우를 영가설(null hypothesis)이라고 한다. 영가설을 사용하는 이유는 [[z-test]]나 [[t-test]] 혹은 [[:chi-square test]] 등을 할 때, 차이가 없음을 (혹은 상관이 없음을) 가정하고 통계적인 테스트를 진행하기 때문이다 (([[:hypothesis_testing#null_table\|가설검증 페이지의 영테이블(null table) 참조]])).
