 모집단(population)의 통계학적 특징을 parameter라고 한다. 가령 population의 평균 ( $\mu$ ), 표준편차 ( $\sigma$ ) 등을 모수치라고 (parameter) 한다. 샘플의 특징은 통계치라고 ([[:statistics]]) 하는데 샘플의 통계치를 가지고 모집단의 모수치를 예측 혹은 추측해 내는 것을 추론통계라고 (inferential statistics) 한다.
