The Radio Act of 1912 was a U.S. federal law passed in response to the Titanic disaster that required all ships in American waters to maintain a constant radio watch for distress signals and mandated federal licensing for all radio operators and stations, laying the groundwork for U.S. regulation of radio communication. It mandated federal oversight of radio by requiring licenses for operators and stations, and also imposed strict requirements for maritime safety, such as 24-hour radio monitoring.
