 연구문제와는 약간 다르지만 비슷한 성격을 갖는 것으로 가설이 (hypothesis) 있다. 연구문제는 두 개념 간의 관계에 대한 질문으로 만들어지지만, 가설은 이 관계에 대한 답을 선언하는 형식으로 만들어 진다. 좀 복잡하게 말하면, 가설은 "이론이나 상식에 기반을 두고 추정한 변인 간의 관계를 일반화하여 선언하는 것"을 말한다.
